I have a recent acquisition, a $1 Legal Tender note series 1878. I have a quick question about this note. The plate number 91 is on the lower right side of the note (noted by the red arrow), but I see what appears to me to be another 91 at the center of the front top margin (noted by the red circle). Any idea what this is?

Actually, I have two questions. I cannot find a reverse plate number on this note anywhere. Should it have one, and if so, where should it be located? I can usually find them fairly quickly, if present, but not in this case...

BTW, I finally about have the hang of preventing distracting reflections from showing up on holdered notes, but didn't notice until afterwards there was a bit of a shadow on the left side... One of these days my coin and note photography skills will get better .

Good looking note @hokiefan. I don't believe this series used back plate numbers. The annotations in the upper margin (selvage) are typically removed when the sheet is trimmed. Sometimes the people tasked with trimming the sheets into individual notes weren't always accurate with their cuts. You see it from time to time on both large and small sized notes.

Thanks, @SteveInTampa, I appreciate the information! I'll have to read up a bit more about that. I also have a Confederate note which has the plate printer's name in a margin, so I assume that's a similar trimming issue.

Regarding the back plate number, I later compared this to my $1 Legal Tender 1880 series note which has a similar design to this one. The back plate number on that one is very apparent, so I believe you're correct that this series has no back plate number.
