Anyone can make very dark to black toned copper nickel coins. All you need is lots of heat.

sel_69, you can heat them up and turn them black, but they won't have any luster. There is a difference.

I have heated mint fresh current date Australian 20 Cent coins with full luster, to red heat then dropped them into cold water.
They come out nearly jet black, with almost all of their original luster.

sel_69, if you are so confident you can make them yourself, go for it, and send them in for grading.

Black Beauty nickels are a sucker market with no defined standards of any kind. They're easily made by hand. Just a junk category.

No collector will deliberately apply excessive heat to a valuable coin just to darken it.
But that doesn't stop experimenting with coins that have face value only.

Coinfrog, I've already got 30 or so BB already holdered but yes, this one will go out with my next submission. Hell, I've got 20 that got shipped back to me today, so technically I've got 50 or so.
Rest in Peace

Coinfrog,

You should probably get to making you some Black nickels and submit them for grading. The 55 from the OP came back as a MS64 Black Beauty.
