Either grease or something similar.
It is a Struck Through something.

Great image for an educational subject.
Questions: (Answers hidden below each question. Highlight that area to see the answers. But fix in mind your answers first.
1.Why can this not be a lamination?
First off, the weight will be normal. A lamination strike will be lighter and would show a ghost image where that area peeled off the coin.
2.Why could this be a struck through a Struck Through Grease coin?
On grease strike coins, the devices will appear lower in height and look wider in width. The weight will be normal.
3.Why could this be coin struck through debris?
While this doesn't appear to be sharp like a struck through wire or an object, it appears to be struck through flattened string. Note how the width seems wider than string? It was probably a greasy piece of string that was flattened by several strikes, wider at the base of the affected area. So it is a struck through grease/string/grit. The weight will be normal as nothing was added to the planchet weight, so it would be normal.
Hope everyone enjoyed this?

Coop --

Your reply above has several lines of text in a white or light gray font (as viewed on my desktop). Very difficult to read.

@ijn1944 - if you double- or triple-click on those lines to highlight (depending on your setup), they're easy to read then.

That was intentional. Coop has done this before. It is a question/answer piece. Just highlight the difficult to read text (like you are going to copy it). You can read it easily then.

thanks Coop, yes, fun as usual

The reason is to allow thought before looking at the answer. This allows the sleuth in you to figure out the answers, and then highlight to show what comments I make on the subject. Just one of the ways when I spot the right coin, to use it as a discussion point.
