I had a blank streak for a while on the 1940-S Cuds and pre Cuds, but it broke a while back with a whole bunch of them showing up all at once. I think this is the last of that batch. 1940-S Lincoln Wheat cent die event - RCD-1C-1940S-14R

Your lighting captures that on nicely.

Looks like a Retained Cud. Note the lower outer wheat grain area. Also not the weakness of the strike on these areas. So the collar is the only keeping this Retained Cud in place.

Just thought I'd share this reply by JC Stevens about his research on precuds that he posted to a thread on another site. Others here may be familiar with this research he has conducted but for others that may not be familiar with him, JC Stevens does the attributions for Cuds-on-Coins. "In reviewing my database on Lincoln Cents I've searched the problems with broken cent dies at the San Francisco mint started with the 1940S and was corrected in 1947. Every year except the 1943S has over 10% breaks on coins I've searched. The other two mints, Denver and Philadelphia, had a low percentage in 1940. These two mints percentage jump up during the war years but nothing like the San Francisco Mint. The percentage of breaks found during the war years was still lower than those seen in the 50's. Starting in 1947 all the mints seems to correct the problem until 1950. Starting in 1950 all the mints striking Lincoln Wheat cent overused the dies with numbers over 10% breaks showing on the coins I searched. In some cases the percentage is over 25%. In short if you want to find broken die error search Lincoln Cents in the 50's. "

That's really quite interesting. I never really thought about just sort of keeping count of how many of what by date to determine population density. Would add an awful lot of time to searching coins, but the results would be a nice overview of when and where things were happening.

The second one. It is easier to read without the 'glare appearance' Very nice coin TB - Great photo of it. your lighting of it really highlights the pre Cud
