For the life of me, I can't find another example anywhere. I wonder if it's rarer than an R-4.

@jerry, you probably already know about tokencatalog.com, but just in case, here is a link to their page on this token:

to the CCF, Jerry

Having avidly collected CWT's since the late 70's, I don't recall seeing this issue before. My guess is that your assumption is correct. In general, I'm surprised how well the Fulds did with their rarity estimates. That said, I've seen a small percentage of glaring errors over the years. Occasionally, the discovery of a hoard would diminish the rarity.

I focused on CWT's from Buffalo, NY for many years. I recall finding over a dozen so-called R-9's from a merchant named Gage. In the patriotic series, I believe the 127/248 brass tokens are underrated and should be R-5, while the copper ones should be R-3, not R-4.

Getting bacl to your subject token, check out the Heritage and Stack's auction archives. I expect that your CWT would grade MS-63 or better. Check the NGC website to see how many of this variety have been graded. I

f you're not as yet a CWTS member, consider joining. BTW, the Newman Numismatic Portal has archived most of the CWTS articles and such that are easily searchable. Good luck researching this issue!

Steve's a good guy, I just bought a bunch of tough auction catalogs he was selling (outside of his expertise) apparently had an old client pass on and was selling for the widow.

IMHO, Steve's THE top token guy in the country. He gets top dollar for what he sells. His excellent photography and conservative grading are principal factors. Over the years, Steve's served the nation's top collectors. My auction consignments over the years have averaged 30% above his conservative estimates.

Possibly, Steve had a buyer in mind when he bought the subject token. Anyone seeking tough tokens would do well to send Steve a want list.
