If say I went into the shop sanded a coin down with the 120 then 240 and 800 to FR-02 and wore it to PO-01 straight so the surface looks natural and there is no sanding marks is this considered cheating? I think so. I am doing an experiment on this and will post pics when I am done.

So an accelerated weardown vs a few decades authentically traveling the pockets of the economy.

Show us how it goes. Natural wear is pretty tough to imitate, so might be hard to get away with a fake that's not just a damaged coin.

Some people intentionally walk around with a coin for years with the intent of creating a lowball.

I've heard of people using rock tumblers to accelerate the process.

Would be fun to watch someone apply progressively finer grit around tiny devices--all those nooks, creases, small openings, etc., etc.

I have tried this and it didn't work. The coin got covered with gouges that completely destroyed it.

I'd be surprised if that could be done well enough to get a straight grade at a TPG, but I've seen several straight-graded PO-1 clad Ikes in PCGS holders over the years that I wondered how they could have truly achieved that level of wear even after 30 or 40 years as a pocket piece...

The oldest member of our coin club recently related the story of how he acquired an uncirculated 1928-S Peace dollar (his birth year) when he was young. He carried it as a pocket piece for decades until it was worn just about smooth. He laughed and said he regretted now not just putting it away as a keepsake when he got it.

To be fair, how many people can say they have a PO-1 1928 S Peace dollar?

I think the light color gives away it being artificial, however the 1964 might get by if the reverse is as good as the obverse.

They'll probably regain some patina as pocket pieces given time. That's why I never understood lowball collecting. It seems too easy to replicate wear, much easier than restoring original surfaces on a high grade coin.

Similar to toning, the true question is market acceptability. If the wear and patina isn't right, I would think experience would dictate. Lowballs are tough and tricky to collect! I've found many lowballs but most of them I've rejected due to damage - including "artificial wear".
