any information would be appreciated. The damage is on a Kennedy half Dollar.

@humble, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree that it is damage, but note that it is often quite hard to definitively know what specifically causes damage. It looks to me like the letter O took a hit which smeared some metal toward the letter D, but I have no idea of the circumstances.

thank you for the warm welcome. does the smearing of metal happen while the metal is wet or is this common when someone hits a coin with a hammer or something?

Ok yes good question. During the striking process, the metal discs that form coins are solid metal, but are "squished" in a die to make the designs. The damage that you are pointing out would have happened after that process. As you likely know, your coin is silver so definitely still worth saving.

The coin condoms create glare and they are too small to see what you do have. They need to be sized more like this:
