I have a 1943 Mercury - bought this at auction - low price but marked ms 65. I was not able to see in person.

This one appears to me have been cleaned. I can see the parallel lines on on the surface. Would that indicate someone scrubbed it? ()

So I'm trying to figure out what exactly it is - because it is not ms 65. From my assessment mostly on the hair and its wear - I am guessing this is vf-20 details.

Someone marked it ms 65 - I just want to make sure I'm not missing something important. Appreciate your input.

I'd agree with the XF/AU range. I try to be very careful when doing the online auctions. I've walked with some awesome pickups, and also some stinkers. Live and learn!

Atog,

Yeah up until this last auction I had done pretty well. I kid you not, every coin I bought at the estate sale, online, was marked 2-4 grades above what it actually was. Of course that totally destroys what I was valuing things at when bidding, but the saving grace is I was only bidding up to 40% of value so broke even.

Learning a lot :) Learning I can't trust what is marked on a coin and learning all the tricks some are doing to rip people off, whizzing coins or whatever else to make look shiny while ruining the coin.

Special thanks to all the input from everyone here. I'm learning a lot from you all.

Thank you for all the responses . I'm new to collecting so whizzing indicates? I actually received this coin in a bundle with different coins. Its does look cleaned to me as well. when I saw its condition I had thought I may have something. Thank you again .

I'm late to the party... I love Mercury dimes, it's true, but not the way this lady has been treated. If it was bought sight unseen as "MS-65" I feel for the buyer. If the OP sends me a pm, I'll send you a much nicer one, no strings attached.

I disagree with those who say this coin is wizzed. Wizzing is an extreme type of cleaning from a rotary tool. If done well, wizzing a coin can leave microscopic scratches in a circular pattern that can look similar to mint luster. This coin appears to have been simply wiped with a cloth.

In the end it doesn't matter, as the value of this coin doesn't change. I am just clarifying terms.
