I just thought this might be interesting to others out there and wanted to share it.

I have an uncle who was a teenager in the 1930's, his dad (my grandfather) was a carpenter. The town where they lived in Texas had an abandoned house the city took over and offered to sell to the highest bidder. It was on a river bank and as the bank eroded it was in greater danger of falling into the river and causing problems. It was for sale to be torn down.

My grandfather ended up being high bidder and my uncle was helping him tear it down for the lumber which my grandfather would use in his trade. When the took some of the doors off the hinges and laid them down, gold coins came rolling out! (don't know how many or denominations, my uncle just remembers seeing them hit the floor like marbles). Seems the people who owned the house had died suddenly, they had drilled holes into the top of the door and would drop coins into the holes for hiding. From that time on, my uncle would always run his hand over the top of doors in old houses feeling for holes drilled in them.

Also, under each brick in front of the fireplace, there were gold coins.

I know my uncle told me they made it through the depression just based on the coins that was found.

Lesson: next time you walk through an older house for sale, or abandoned, run your hand over the top of the doors! I have but have never found anything, think I have developed an obsessive-compusulsive disorder!

Cool story....that should be posted over on a treasure/metal detecting site. Although they werent actively searching for gold or treasure, it's still a really neat find.

My friend's parents were re-doing their kitchen. They were going back and forth on whether or not to rip out the sheet-rock and replace it. They decided to do so. Upon tearing down one of the walls they found a coffee can with $15K cash in it.

Nice choice!

It's an old plumbing trick to use coins as shims when the floor is not even. I have used as many as 10-15 coins on one toilet when the floor was really bad. Sometimes during the shimming process coins slip too far under the toilet & disappear. However, it would be very unusual for there to be a "handful" under there, so there's no telling how they got there.

There is an old Spanish belief that putting coins specially gold coins on the foundation and post of the house, on the first step of the stairs, on the doorways, or any entrance in the house, brings in good luck. I'm not sure if this is also a chinese belief. In the Philippines so many gold/silver coins are found on old spanish houses.

Hey basicbob-

Great story! I can't imagine what I would do If I found a number of gold coins somewhere-

I guess trade them in for key date Morgans

Anyway, I have a related story but not nearly as cool. I lived in a very old house on the third floor during my college years. One night we were playing a drinking game and the pingpong ball went rolling under this huge oak dresser thing that was bolted to the floor and essentially came with (and will forever be in) the apartment.

When my buddy reached under to pull out the ball he also pulled out a little box full of old stamps that were cut from envelopes. Some of the stamps were from the 40s.

I had them appraised but they were worth very little. I still have them though - in the safe wtih my coins.

No gold though

Nice stories and I really enjoyed reading them all. It is always cool to hear what great things people find in the weirdest places. I will be putting on my insulated coveralls in the morning and heading back out to revisit some the old abandoned houses in my area. I'll be checkin the tops of them doors for sure
