First time this has ever happened to me. I bought a nice looking 1938-D Walking Liberty half. This is a key date and I got it on ebay for around twenty dollars less than others listed for this date on a Buy-It-Now. I received the coin today and you can plainly see the tail of the nine extending into the bottom loop of the eight. The bottom loop of the eight is also too thin on one area. It looks to me that someone has altered a 1939-D. The seller has perfect feedback so I am hoping he will honor his return policy. In my defense this was hard to see in the listing photo, but you sure can see it with a magnifying glass. Once again, when you are on the Bay - Caveat Emptor!

Ouch! It is quite possible the seller missed it as well. I hope he will allow you to return it without hassle.

Now I'll have to inspect my 1938-D Walker which I also picked up on ebay. It never occurred to me to check for an alteration. Okie, I'd love to see a photo of this coin, especially an image showing details of the altered date. Can you post one?

Now you know why it was under priced ;-) Are you going to send it back? I would also be interested in photos.

That is a bummer. I've got a 1938-D coming my way, in a slab.

It is already packaged to go back and I don't have the capability to take a close up of the date that would show what I am talking about. I just heard from the seller who was very nice and offered to trade me. He told me he had just bought a roll of 38-Ds. He sent me a scan of one that he wants to trade me and it has a tail sticking out of the 8 on the date. I think this guy is honest, but really!~! I have looked on Heritage and Berk's website at around fifty 38-Ds and I can't find a single one that have a metal tail sticking out from the bottom loop of the 8. I wonder if he bought a whole roll of re-worked dates?

OK he sent me a scan of another one that looks just fine and we are trading. It sure is a pleasure to run into a seller on ebay that will work with you.

Sounds like a good seller. Just inexperienced.

A 38-D at $20 or so would be a red flag to me. Maybe other bidders were seeing what you were not.
Hope you get your money back.

It wasn't twenty dollars total, it was around twenty dollars LESS than the prices of the other ones I was looking at.

The seller's handle is onetradebob. He sent me a different 38-D Walker that has no problems with an altered date, and grades one full grade over the one I originally paid for. In addition he sent a five dollar bill to reimburse me for returning the first one. All of this accompanied by excellent communication throughout. There are still some great seller on ebay.

Never thought of that one. When we were kids we use to make fake 1922 Cents from 1922D's, 14D Cents from 44D's. Lots of other things but never thought of that one. Now I too will go look at all mine. Always remember that on ebay the feedbacks are easily faked.
