Hello,

I have this 1887 Indian Head penny that has great detail on it, but a little problem

It has spots on it, its a darker color overall and the rim is really getting corroded.

Is this coin a goner or is there hope for it?

Nothing to be done to conserve that unfortunately, IMO.

Yes looks like bronze disease--although normally that seems to show up only on much older coins. If so, you need to segregate this from all other copper coins.

Is something like that safe in a cardboard flip around other pennies in cardboard flip - or should I just put this penny back into circulation?

It will never be worth the cost of selling it.

I put dozens of cull Indians back into circulation every year at the local supermarket. Still get a manager call every once in awhile.

I would give these away for free to anyone who asks, but the postage is prohibitive.

As a cull with a date, but no holes, it is still worth 30 cents on the wholesale market.

@coin, I would not store this with other cents, even if each coin is in its own 2x2 but maybe I'm just a little paranoid.

Consider it a space-filler; you're waiting for a better coin.

And I strongly suggest you keep it away from your other copper coins.

Would be a good Verdi-Care experiment piece. At least it can have that dignity.

By the way...
