This is a bit of an unusual question, But I was curious what your opinions were on the best countries to try and collect coins from.

One of the reasons I ask is because I have a large amount of foreign coins from seemingly every country on the planet, To do research on all of them would take around 10 years or so, heh, So I was curious what you viewed as the best countries for coin collection.

The United States, Great britain, Canada, And Austrialia come without question as some of the best, But I was curious also about other countries like Germany, France, Russia, And smaller lesser known countries, etc. And are there countries where most coins are not worth a premium?

Currently, I'm doing research on german coinage, which appears to be quite valuable.

I know also that things like coin condition, mintmark, material, etc, all have a dramatic effect on any coins price, But are there countries that have coins that have a higher chance at having higher value coins than other countries? Or maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way and it depends more on the coin than it does the country of origin, hmm...

i'd like to hear your opinion.

Well Joe, I like the Italian coinage, especially that of the 1990's. That is when they started minting commemoratives that went into everyday circulation. My favorite which is the 200 Lira coin commemorating 180 years of the national police, the Arma dei Carabinieri. The reverse of that coin looks really nice. I will be posting pics this weekend in my gallery I'll see to it that this one is the first. As long as I can get this lousy camera to work.

You know, Joe, if you just get a copy of Krause's Coin catalogue, that will tell you almost everything you need to know about types of coins. For example, you can see what years those big English pennies were minted, what years they weren't, and which years are rarities.

If nothing else, I've learned that most catalogues are, if nothing else, good reference works.

Russian and Korean coin prices are quite outrageous in my opinion. Japanese on the other hand seems to be a bargain or probably underrated.

All of Them!

A lot of members try to collect One From Every Country. You can also try and pick specific themes or pattern designs to go for. Some collect animals, ships, F.A.O., silver commemoratives.

My personal collection consists of O.F.E.C. with an emphasis on WWII themed commemorative. But if ya want specifics I want to get as many Russian and Brazilian coins as possible

That'll work but how would you decide to leave your continent when done?

You could hop into a balloon and parachute out at the first bit of land you see and start all over again. Sure hope it's not Tuvalu though cause their coins are expensive

Take your time, get them separated by country, then try placing them into pages, groups, continents, or whatever, it won't take ten years!
In fact it goes real fast, its addictive! As far as what country is best to collect from...just one question...do they use coins there?
Then Collect 'em

Possibly China. Then you would be actually collecting coins from all over the world anyway.

After collecting nothing but U.S. and Canadian, I turned to Australian.

Coins from the Cayman Islands and Bermuda also facinate me.

I don't think so, First thing you do is segregate by country. Then, remove all the same (type, years) coins and just choose the best. From there for sure you will get down to at least half of what you have.

"Best" from what perspective? Most likely to improve in value? Least expensive to collect? Easiest to complete sets? Largest range of designs/denominations? Smallest?

And that's not even getting started on the attractiveness of designs...

Personally, I think the best countries to collect from are the ones that have coinage that interests you the most- be it for design, history, or any reason you may have. My great-grandparents were from Germany, Switzerland, Poland, and Czechoslovakia, so I tend to gravitate towards those.

then try placing them into pages

Coinaholic, I had mine in pages and they kept falling out. Can you or anyone else recommend a good brand of pages. I got mine at a hobby shop in Maryland for like $5.95 a hundred. They were the only ones I have ever seen in a store of any kind. I feel that I paid about $6.00 too much for them

Hi Joe,

I think all of the different coin types in the world are "the best" to collect. Each coin from each country will take you on a virtual tour of the country and you get to explore their history and heritage. I look up each coin's country in Wikipedia as I sort through my world coin pile so I know what is the currency letter used. It's all too easy to get carried with Wikipedia so the work is "slow" but it sure is fun! Thankfully, there's no rush. :-)

Each coin will have it's own artistic style. I am very used to US coins so it is refreshing to see a design that doesn't have a former US President on it.

So collect 'em all. If you want one of each from each country then go for it. I wouldn't worry too much about being "complete" or "incomplete" as long as you enjoy what you have.
