Yeah JB....I've repeated this comment before that
actually another member made.....and it made me change "my" mind about safes being the
safest place to keep a collection.
It was
Metalman at the time who suggested too, that thieves could just demand that you take them to the bank...(or have you go there and do it)....And I have ALWAYS said too.....that it is also "Fire proof" and "Flood Proof" and "Tornado proof" and better "climate controlled" (or at least better than at home) .....as my "
additional reasons" for Security Deposit Boxes.
But as for Metalman's theory (and yours too apparently) about thieves requesting you to go to the bank while your family stays behind in danger, well......here's my thoughts.
The
likelihood of them doing such a well thought out and time consuming caper like
that IS MUCH MUCH MUCH LESS THAN SOME RANDOM HOME INVASION OR MIDNIGHT BREAK-IN, WHERE THEY HAPPEN TO SEE A NICE LOOKING SAFE IN YOUR HOME AND ASK TO SEE WHATCHA GOT IN THERE ! That's just a fact.
And as far as word getting out over a period of years about your "nice coin collection at home", and that fact spreading to the wrong person or people.....THAT'S gonna happen to all of us eventually. (not necessarily the
crime, but certainly the number of people knowing about it will increase)
I see the odds at .003% out of 765,000 that they would hold your family for ransom while you go fetch your coins from the bank.....giving time for swat teams, police, etc. to respond, surround....take action......
the more time a thief takes.......
he knows the more likely he'll get caught.....thieves want "EASY" crimes that they can get in ....get out.....and get away with. And so, I don't believe "The Miracle Caper" would be very likely to happen or even thought of by most felons who want to grab what they can in your home and leave.......credit cards....atm cards...cash.....jewelry...coins.....easy to get stuff.
They might even make you take them to a drive up ATM and get the cash and pin number.....but holding your family for ransom because they're aware of a few thousand dollars in coins at your bank.......just not too
likely when compared
STATISTICALLY to what happens.
At least in my opinion.......
Cause if they send
me to the bank......I'll come back with a SWAT team and Navy Seals and few Green Berets and a couple of Delta Force guys !........

And if one of the thieves comes along for the ride.......he won't finish the trip very healthy......trust me.
I guess, for me it's just the actual "Odds" and "Likelihood" and "Statistics" in my own community. Home invasions do happen all the time here where I live.......but few to NONE where they have well thought out "capers" and pull off something ingenious and more risky than necessary.
