For learning purposes, how do you tell? Is there a general guideline or something? I have been hoarding a lot of coins for a while and just recently got the microscope and actually started going through all of them and looking at them. So any help is appreciated!

One thing to remember is that it is only an error if it happens during the striking of the coin, anything that happens to it after is considered damage. In this case, as the rims are formed on the planchet before a coin is struck, there is no way they can be damaged at that time.
