many of those started of a brassy colour but are now a silvery gray zinc colour. The plating must have been very thin.

Yes I have seen those coins before, but the coin that iam talking about is made of real silver because of the dark colour from oxidization over the years. The coin is a 1891 john j c Abbott it does not look like any of those coins.thanks

Regardless if its silver or not, its not a Canadian decimal coin. No Prime Minister have ever graced our money. Perhaps its a commerative silver medallion, as I am showing he was P.M from 1891, until his resignation from poor health in 1892.
Whats on the other side of this medallion?..Id love to see a picture. I wouldn't hesitiate researching this online but I need more info.

Well,,,still a tough one to peg.
Please have a look at this forum thread from a member who seems to have exactly the same medallion, except with an 1892 P.M on it. He mentions the silver colour, along with how it seems to be heavier in weight than on would expect. Scroll down for someones advise over what it is.
It appears it could have been a 1967 centennial issued effort, and not related to the pics listed above..

Is this it? Same legend as you describe as well as the same reverse...

John-J-C-Abbott-Coin-Silver-1891

BTW, Dollar48, your answer guy is wrong. This series was not issued in 1967 and has nothing to do with the Centennial. Reason? Last medal in the series is Trudeau, and he didn't become PM until 1968.

They were issued by Shell around 1970 or '71. There was a cardboard holder available from the gas station to hold them in; as well, if one wanted, they could send away for a wooden plaque to use instead.

The giveaway was so successful that a couple of years later, Shell issued another series with the Provincial Coats of Arms on one side and their floral emblems on the reverse.

The gold plating on all of them is very thin and wears off quickly. I have seen them without the plating in colours from gray to black. Someone could have made a mint back then replating them, I'm sure.

Unless they issued a premium silver set, which I haven't heard about (anything is possible) then it must be part of the sets shown above. The description of the obverse and reverse sounds identical. Don't assume dark oxidization means silver. As you can see on my Abbot medal above it is starting to turn black.

As I recall, there was only the goldtone set; nevertheless, I drove my dad crazy trying to complete it. He wouldn't go for the deluxe wood plaque, though.

After that, I decreed that he had to buy his gas at Esso, so I could get the Power Players stamps. That time, I held out for the hardbound album over the cardboard covered one.

Update (25.1.09):

Found a picture of the cardboard plaque online at ebay --
