The engrave made a quite spectacular error on this coin. He put the S for Sols on the wrong side of the die. Then he tried to erase it and stamped a 2 at this place.
My guess from the look of it, they probably had punches for the 'S' and the '2', and the person who was in charge of repunching made an 'oopsie' and tried to cover it up. Doesn't look like they did a very good job at it either with all due respect lol, I guess that's a good thing because now we have this cool die event.
The quality of the workmanship was not a priority for these mass produced coins. The lettering is quite uneven in places, which is common for these pieces. But the type of mistake seen here is more unusual. Nice catch.
Thank you for your comments. Yes, you can find plenty of varieties for these coins, like repunched dates or error in the spelling of FRANCOIS becoming FRANCIOS. But these errors appear more frequently on the 12 Deniers coins and this is the first time I saw an error like this.
