Looks like notching to me. Maybe Johnwayne can chime in!

There is a very scarce 1882 that is an Obv2 over and Obv 1 with heavy punch doubling. That means that, when completing the sinking of the die, both an Obv 1 and an Obv 2 hub was used. This coin is a straight Obv 2 with doubling, but I think that it is more mechanical or Machine Doubling, even though there appears to be things close to notching on some of the letters. The letters involved and the amount of offset are different from this coin and the 2/1 I mentioned. The 2/1 had much more offset, especially the A's in Canada, and involved more letters. Nice coin .... a keeper

Thanks, Okiecoiner. It's not much, but I thought it was noticeable.

If this were a modern cent I would say 100% doubled die, however, I don't know much about the vickies.

What has me thinking doubled die is not only the splits but the set of beads below the letters would also show the same amount of Mechanical Doubling if that were the case, the beads are the same height (on the coin) and depth (on the die) that if a shift or vibration occurred those beads would also be affected IMO, but again vickies are not my area by any means.

Thanks, John, I noticed along the same lines myself. But directly below the letters that have some offset, the beads are not round, but somewhat oval. Md doesn't affect every ellement of any of the designs. The '81's and '82's had quite a few instances of MD, as the dies became a little loose in the holders.

Full obverse pic suggests cleaning.

I don't see any evidence of cleaning. There is light reflecting off the 2X2 mylar.

I agree with Okiecoiner. I studied the coin carefully, and there is no evidence of any kind of cleaning. Again, it is not really important, and is minor, but when I saw it I thought I'd report it.
