I purchased this coin today in an ANACS holder graded XF45 and noticed that one of the letters (F on OF) in the reverse legend had an odd extension. Would any of you error coin experts explain how this could have been occurred?

I also ran the coin through the earlydollars.org wizard for attribution and could not find the reverse with this odd F in the reverse. Any thoughts on finding this reverse die?

Many thanks in advance!

That is odd looking @ns. It looks like a well-placed die crack, but I'm not sure as it is pretty stout. .

Thanks Spence. That would be a really coincidental die crack. To me it looks like an accidental or maybe even an intentional die gouge. Perhaps a slip of an engraving tool?

No expertise here, but to me it looks like a regular F with a convenient smudge and maybe a nick there.

Here's one with several cracks intersecting near the F so it could be similar to that too I guess. I presume you don't have the coin in hand?

Looks like a die gouge as it seems like an unlikely spot for a die break to originate. Will be easier to see once you have it in hand.

Yes the width seems more consistent with a die gouge, but to me the location is where I might expect a die crack to get started—right at a sharp corner of the design.

This came in. Further thoughts? Thanks!

The extension on the F in OF does not appear raised:

But there does seem to be some prominent clashing in the reverse.

Very nice! Too bad the oddity on the reverse is damage. Also see a bit of cabinet rub in the hair. But the remaining detail in the eye, stars, and eagle's feathers are stunning!
