Hi y'all,
To me, it looks to be in the VF-XF range.
I have a 1866 Shield nickel. Thoughts on grade and value?

Kinda of a nicer eye appeal 1st year type, and I'll guess about VF-35/XF-40 like you estimate. On that gunky looking stuff around the coin, I take a toothpick and lightly scrape it off and then use 100% acetone remove even more gunk. I also like those obverse die cracks; they add to the interest of the coin.

I'll say EF-40.

I'll go with an XF-40 as well. Maybe around $50?

the sharpness of the lettering, veins in the leaves and especially the separated and full rays as well as the star centers put this one at XF45 in my book. it may have been cleaned a while ago but I think it would grade straight. an acetone soak wont hurt
