For those that have the CherryPickers Guide, what do you think?

Problem is, this is not a 1943D but a 1944D. Checked some 44s at my local B&M and all three mints seem to have this master doubling. Just a coincidence in appearance or could a die intended for 1944 been used in 1943?

I can't say conclusively from the pictures. One of the problems with pictures being this close is that they knock the perspective for a loop. They are great magnified shots but you need the context of the rest of the coin sometimes.

What I see mostly is Die Deterioration but there are some intriguing aspects of this coin. Can you back up the camera a little bit?

Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill, couldn't get a decent wide angle of the 44D so I borrowed a plain 44 from my dealer. Still not the best picture but you can see some of the doubling or die wear. He also had a well worn 44S that I could pick out the same features with magnification.

Bill, I suppose if there was some kind of defect in the die process, they could all wear the same way, but seems unlikely.

MorgansRMine,
It could be....die wear is still a part of the equation but some of the other parts like the earlobe look pretty good. I lean in the direction of this being a DDO of some sort.

I'm still not convinced on this one yet. If it were a DDO, then why wouldn't the outside devices show more of the doubling seen on the center devices. Maybe an image of the outside devices would be more helpful?

coop,

It is possible that the tilted hub scenario happened way prior to the 1997 DDO Doubled Ear Lincolns and the more recent doubled ear States Quarters. Just a thought as that could localize the doubling to the area under the earlobe on Washington. What d'ya think?

Thanks,
Bill
