Hey everyone - curious for your take on this guy. It's graded, to my eye generously, MS-63 at PCGS - this photo is actually featured on their website POP list. It's clearly higher grade but I feel like I'm seeing some wear on the descending portion of the braid - I would have thought AU-58 or maybe MS-60. Victoria has a bit of a knife wound on her neck as well. Most concerning is the asymmetrical toning and that odd little blotchy area at 4 o'clock on the obverse. I think that's just deeper toning but the dreaded corrosion seems plausible too. It's on sale at the 7 November TCNC auction...caught my eye and now I'm alternatively talking it up and then down in my head. Curious for your take on it oh sages of coinland.  |

Loos like a 62 but the tone bumped it up to 63.

I don't see any wear but the scratch on the neck is just way too distracting on such a small coin for 63.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Considering the strike characteristics of fish scales and their fragility, it's a pretty decent coin. On a positive note, it definitely is higher grade, and doesn't look like a details coin.
I played with the photo a bit, eliminating color and reducing light. That brought out the surface conditions a bit more. I don't see evidence of circulation. It looks more like central strike weakness, highlighted more by the toning.
That said, MS-63 seems generous, even by fluffy U.S. standards. The neck wound is an eye appeal problem, but the scratch directly below it is, too. It runs E-W from the neck, through the field, and across the lower curl. Some of this is hidden by the toning, but that raises the question what this coin will look like in another 5-10 years, since toning is progressive. MS-60 seems about right.
I wouldn't run away from this one, but I would apply some eye appeal pricing tough love, and dig in my heels pretty hard at my limit.

Looks decent , but I think a touch optimistic for grade .
If you could buy it for 55 to 58 money probably not a bad buy.

I agree with how pacificoin put it. If you can get it for a discounted price then go for it, but MS-63 is beyond a generous grade.

I'm on board with what the rest have said.
Its a very nice coin, no doubt. Love the toning and all but the grade is difficult since that tiny bit of dullness in the descending braid suggests wear but is very likely the result of a worn die. And of course the scratch (I don't see the other scratch mentioned by fortcollins) is there.
The Charleton values are AU55 @ $1200 all the way to MS63 @ $3500. What is it worth to you?

@TD - plan is to tune in and watch this one live... haven't settled on a hard cut off but I try not to pay more than 75% of the Trends listing and, in my view, [and with the limitation that I haven't got it in hand] this coin is an AU-58. So, a rough cut somewhere between $1,500 and $1,700? We shall see - there are two conflicting effects that kick in during auctions: 1] cold feet and 2] what the hell?

This guy, proud hoarder of the '82s, says "Wow!!! That's a pretty coin" We can nitpick the technicalities, but it might have too much eye appeal regardless to keep a couple fine folks from running up the bidding a tad. It might be a 58/61 (and I get your points), but that color I bet brings 63 money.

@Silver101, unfortunately my Newfoundland contributions and Canada cent varieties are sorely lacking. Someday... But I'd love to say the above eye candy of this thread would be coming my way. But alas... Jealous of whoever wins.

The toning seems to obscure a lot of scratches. Just at the magnification pics real closely.
I am tentatively at AU55-58. But those scratches are real and the toning is suspect, then it becomes AU Details.
