If that's legit, I don't understand why it was sold on ebay. That would get a lot of publicity on a Heritage auction, and a much higher closing methinks. Still, can't feel bad if a collector got a smokin' deal.

Could be inheritance, or something. Still, I talked to the seller over email, and 'she' seemed a bit dodgy, so I have strong doubts about that. I mean, if it was a scam, what could they do, though? It's NGC certified and has a money back guarantee. Fake slab?

The cert number checks out with NGC. The seller just joined ebay 3 days ago though! Two thoughts: 1) Stolen or 2) Counterfeit slab. Something about the reverse doesn't look right but it could be the pics. This auction smells like trouble.

Stolen crossed my mind too. When I talked to the seller and explained that they got royally ripped off at that amount, they kept telling me to make an offer, even after I said I couldn't afford it. It might be wise to report the auction.

Not to get all vigilante or anything, but if a coin like this were stolen, wouldn't ebay be the first place to check?

Can someone tell me how to properly contact them? I went into the security center and kept hitting dead ends

If it is legit, saying the buyer got a great deal would be an understatment. Quite a big "If".

Oh, I can use the CCF link. This is extremely convenient.

Quote: Only the photos need to be stolen. Bingo. The seller undoubtedly doesn't even own the coin, or have it in his possession. I've seen this kind of scam on e-bilge for a long time.

Hmmm...valid points raised. Particularly since the seller has a "0" rating. Say this is outright fraud, and the seller joined ebay to commit just this one transaction. Given the auction closing price, would it be easy to set up a bogus account for PayPal? String the buyer along while the money clears, and then goodbye forever? --not that I usually think along these lines. On the other hand, the photos of the coin don't appear to be cobbled from Heritage, Bowers, or Stacks--not their usual quality for a coin this high-end. So do we think it's possible this was sold on ebay before? Btw, I think it's absolutely crazy to bid $20K on an ebay where the seller has no prior history

Kurt, I think the seller needs to be Paypal verified to receive that much money. That would not be easy to do and get away with.
