I don't think it is a Cud. Cuds are usually higher than the rim. Need to see the obverse side of the coin where this is located at (K3). If it is a Cud, there will be weakness of the strike on the reverse. It may be a flattened Rim Fin?

Not unless this is a Retained Cud!

Looks like a match to RCD-1c-1917S-01R: http://cuds-on-coins.com/lincoln-ce...s-1909-1939/

Great find!

Why is the LiB missing on the obverse?
1917-S-Penny-DDO?-And-A-Cud-On-The-Reverse?
Your answer please?
A. Weakness from the Cud on the reverse?
B. Grease Fill on the die.
C. Circulation wear on the coin.
D. None of the above?

Hidden answer below: Highlight the area in the next line:
Answers B and C are correct. The grease prevented some devices to be thinned, and the circulation wear wore off what was there. But note all devices are not affected evenly?
Answers in the blank area between these two lines. High light that space to see the answer.
