I found this one today, but I can find no listings for an Illinois variety anywhere. What am I missing? Seems to be extra 'stuff' in the top left corner of the state, all over his face and neck and next to the sailboat.(?)
Thanks again for looking!

Not a variety or an error. I see die chips and damage.

@kris, could that be a die chip in the NW corner of the state? It is a bit hard to tell as this level of circulation wear might mean that it is just smeared metal. Let's see what others think.

So, the other State Quarter varieties look like die chips as well. How do I tell the difference?

Die chips won't be found in any "listing" because they are so random and somewhat arbitrary. Unless the chip is large in size, generally there is very little numismatic interest for collectors.

Die chips are die events. Kind of the acne look on the coins. But on the die, it is a void where part of the die broke away. So it was a normal die from the start, but a small void will make the coins show a slight raise on the coins fields. Sometimes they happen just short of the design. Sometimes they happen on devices. Just breakdown of the dies life showing as raised areas on coins. They happen a lot.

There is no premium for these. They happen often. They will not be listed. Some sites to list some die events, but listings are mostly a variety coin issue. Your coin is the beginning of the die event. People give names to these, but they are just die events. They even happen on incuse devices:

So the devices that were to be incuse (raised on the die) breaks off and now the incuse mark is filled with a die chip were it broke off the die. Note the image above. Still just a die event.

Okay, I think I get it. So, the die chips on some State Quarters (ie, colorado) isn't a variety, it's just a Cud error that someone likes enough to discuss? Because it effects the coin in a major way? Can be valuable to someone, but not really a variety or error because they happen so frequently.
Does that sum it up about right?

It's a die chip. A Cud would be the breakaway of the edge of the die. The difference? On is just a die event. (Chip) But a Cud is a die ending event.:
