Looks like a notch and maybe a little speration line down the side from the notch?

On this one almost all the D mintmarks on 1979 D cents either look like this or they look like a blob. This is a relatively normal attribute of the 1979 D cent.

Take 50 1979 D cents and 35 or more will look just like this one.

That is caused by a damaged punch. Because of the sheer number of these that is the case a Bill mentioned.
