I bought a little bag of shredded BU Lincoln cents off ebay. Honestly didn't know what they were and listing title didn't help much: Roll of Shredded Muiliob Lincoln Cents US Man Made Mint Metal Error WOW! RARE!

So can anyone explain these? I've seen dates from 1960-D, 1970-D, 199X-D and 1997. So some are zinc and should rule out someone trying to make bullion. I just dunno. Paid less than $2.50 for 5.5 ounces of this stuff including shipping.

Shredded Lincoln cents - any ideas?

It's a very rare Lincoln Cent kit. Assembly required, glue not included.

Does the mint shred coins that are meant to be re-smelted?

Or they were going to melt them and then discovered they are not all copper, but zinc ones were in the mix, so rather than sort them, they sold them off?
