Metal detecting is so much fun! You never know what you're going to find.
Your button is of a nautical theme with the anchor on the front. That motif has been used by many countries of the world navy's as a symbol for their branch of service.
Your button is not a navy button. In the late Victorian era these and similar styles of button were were popular for fashion. The construction of a pressed brass front and steel back on the two piece button denoted something more of a civilian product. Military buttons of that time were much better built.
Stay out there and keep looking , you'll find that old navy button before too long...the banks of the St Lawrence are an old area and popular with detectorists and many great finds have been made there!

All I can tell you is that it is from the British Royal Navy.
Each class had their own button so it may take some searching to narrow it down.

Respectfully JimmyD...British Royal Navy of that era had a rope border and the fouled anchor always is topped with a crown. Brass back and loop with a backmark of London. This example isn't the quality of the Royal Navy

Not British navy. I don't think it can be traced to anywhere specific.

I agree with Ironhorse, Its a very common nautical theme /style button and it has the look of a "cheap" button from the Victorian era... Still a great find and I would have been happy to add it to my find bag!

I have zero knowledge of British Royal Navy buttons, but do note that this website seems to be pretty knowledgeable:

Just a thought here. Couldn't the curved anchor stock suggest a merchant or passenger ship anchor? If so, you know where you found the button. Was it near any known St. Lawrence River shipwreck?
