Hello everyone, I have been very busy with work (which is a good thing, especially now!) the last several months and have not had much time to participate in CCF. I manufacture ammunition and we can barely keep up with the orders! Anyways, I sure have missed all the great resources and people here at CCF. So for my first post in a long while, I will have a contest. The first person who can tell me "who was Black Diamond and what became of him?" will win an assortment of 2x2 plastic coin holders pictured below.(shipping is also free) Good Luck!

The Buffalo Bison on the reverse of the US Nickel
Black Diamond was born in 1893 of a bull and cow given to the zoo by Barnum and Bailey. He weighed 1550 pounds (ultimately yielding 750 pounds of usable meat). He was a popular attraction at the zoo and was featured on the cover of the "Popular Official Guide to the Zoo York Zoological Park" in 1909.
Sick and disabled at age 22, Black Diamond was put up for auction June 28, 1915. However, no bids were received. He was purchased for slaughter in a private sale for $300 by A. Silz, inc., a game and poultry dealer. He was slaughtered November 17 and "Black Diamond Steaks" were sold for $2 a pound. Fred Santer, a New York taxidermist, mounted Black Diamond's head and turned his hide into a then-fashionable 13-foot automobile robe.
PS: I edited this but I still think I am first to answer who he was and what became of him.

The Bison were off course hunted and almost became extinct.

Bison were hunted almost to extinction in the 19th century and were reduced to a few hundred by the mid-1880s. The main reason they were hunted was for their skins, with the rest of the animal left behind to decay on the ground. After the animals rotted, their bones were collected and shipped back east in large quantities. In 1874, President Ulysses S. Grant "pocket vetoed" a Federal bill to protect the dwindling bison herds, and in 1875 General Philip Sheridan pleaded to a joint session of Congress to slaughter the herds, to deprive the Indians of their source of food. By 1884, the American Bison was close to extinction.

Congradulations Wheezydog ! Email me your address and I will ship them to you monday. I always like this story of Black Diamond and often wondered what he tasted like To me this is what makes collecting coins so fascinating, researching the historical background of any particular coin series.

SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEET! THANK YOU CuprousCoin THANK YOU - THANK YOU! I really needed those holders badly. You are right on time with those. Thanks so much! I don't think I am going to order a Black Diamond Steak anytime soon after knowing that ole Black Diamond got sick and disabled. They bulk sell marinated steaks in my area that are vacuum portion packed in 8 oz or 12 oz size and they go by Black Diamond Steaks on Restaurant menus.

I don't know what became of the automobile robe but the head used to be, and maybe still is, owned by Bill Fivaz.
