Here's a coin that is not too expensive in low grade but zooms way up as the grade approaches MS. This example is in an ANACS holder. Would anyone like to exercise their grading skills?

I'll take a shot and say F15. I guess it could make VF, but I'm pretty sure F15 is fair.

I think F15 does it. Did the reverse scratches escape causing a Net grade?

Not enough shield detail to be VF so I agree with F-15

J. H. Cline in his Standing Liberty Quarters book has this to say about the 1927-S:

"Like most 'S' mint coins this date comes weakly struck."

And,

"Considerable relaxation of the normal grading standards should be exercised when grading the top five grades of this date."

It looks to me like ANACS took this advice to heart, awarding this coin a VF-30 grade (no defects noted). This one really does appear to have a particularly weak strike since there are still traces of luster visible in the recesses and especially between the letters of "QUARTER DOLLAR".

Jaobler, thanks for sharing that one. I had that one as a VF20. Now I've looked at the 1928-S's on Heritage. There is a wide range of coins that have received VF-30 grades from all three TGP's. Saw more than one where some of the stars on the reverse were barely struck up at all.

Interesting stuff.
