Does anybody know where I can find a list of the mints that produced hammered english coins and the inscription each mint put on their coins.

I am particularly trying to identify which mint produced this coin.

Mints-That-Produced-Hammered-English-Coins

I think I can make out ___M CIVI TAS

The obverse is totally illegible.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you westcoin,

CIVITAS DVNELM = City of Durham

I was confused because CIVITAS DVREME is also Durham, but the inscription on my coin ended with an M.

Glad I could help, that is a neat old coin you have, even if it's a disaster on the other side. I've got a couple like that myself, not hammered English coins but a 1794 US cent and a couple of Irish farthings.

A list would be too long as there were so many. It changed through time, but peak eras include the Late Saxon/Norman era - the time of King Edward I and again in the time of Henry VIII and of course Charles the 1st. There were even mints in Calais and other French cities as England occupied them in the 1066 - 1558 period.

Usually before 1272, many pennies had the name of the moneyer and this could be either a Saxon name (Godwine, Elfric) or Norman (Geoffrey, Stivene) etc.
