You should be able to find a nice certified VF in the $250 to $325 range that is certified. Several have sold at Heritage auctions and great collections in the past year or so. For a mintage of only 50K they aren't too hard to find even worn.
EDITED to say "certified" I'm not convinced this is a fake coin myself, it looks pretty good off hand from the small photos. Depending on the cost it might be worth taking a chance on it.

Real or not , This is a coin you would not ever want to own. Just plain dog ugly in my opinion , cleaned and carried as a pocket piece are the issues . Save a few more $$$ and acquire a pleasing original EF45 To AU53 .

@dave700x: Just my opinion, but I don't think it's fair to compare a colorfully-toned MS-67 coin with near pristine original surfaces to a coin that has been cleaned and has damaged surfaces. Is there something specific you can point to between the images?
Though the weight you noted is consistent with a coin that exhibit the level of wear (i.e., metal loss) as the one presented, I would want to do more testing on it. Is hands-on testing possible?
From the size and low resolution of the images, I am not comfortable passing judgement on its authenticity. I will say, however, it seems clear that the coin has damaged surfaces and is one that should be avoided. I'm in agreement with others here on that count! A nicer, original coin will come along.
The Lafayette dollar is not a scarce or rare coin. You will be able to find a nicer, undamaged example with just a little effort and patience.

IMHO, genuine, DuVall 1-B, probably F/VF Details. "AT" of STATES cut high, tip of Lafayette's bust points directly to first "L" of DOLLAR, short pointy tip of Washington's bust = Obverse Die #1. Short stem, 14 short leaves, bottom leaf midway between "1" and "9" of year = Reverse B. This is the most common die variety. That said, this coin has been circulated heavily and whizzed to death. Pass on it. There are plenty of collectible Lafayette Dollars out there. They are readily available to AU-58, and a decent EF-low AU example can be snagged in the $350-450 range with some effort. EDIT: @commems beat me to the post. Agree.

I guess it being a cleaned circulated example threw me off to seeing differences that were not really of questionable origin.
My apologies to the OP...

I am collecting circulated early commemoratives (I like them better and a lot more affordable). Because I thought this was fake, I missed out on the ebay auction, it went for $155. Oh well, maybe next time . . .

@russell1256, I don't think you missed out on this one. At $155, it was overpriced. My initial reaction was $80-$100-ish because of the whizzing. I really don't think you would have been happy with this one a year or two down the road.
The common Lafayette grade range is EF to slider. VF coins do exist, and I think you could find a straight-grade high VF DuVall 1-B or 2-C with nice eye appeal for that price. Don't be in a hurry. They appear from time to time. You will know the one when you see it.
