I gave this nickel an acetone bath and there is still some sort of something on there.

Any ideas on what this is?

Thanks!

@numis, to be more clear, can you please describe the order of these three pics? Are they all taken after the bath or, for example, is the first pic after the bath and the two others from before the bath? Or are all three pics taken after the bath, but with different types of illumination? Thx.

All of the pics are after the bath, its not noticeable looking at it straight on, but at a certain angle it is.

If a surface contaminant doesn't come off with acetone you might be out of luck. You could try warm soapy water, if you haven't done so already.

Keep in mind, although the 1893 is a slightly better date nickel, your coin grades Fine-12 at best and high retail value for a problem-free example is maybe $20. Rather than trying to fix this coin, consider trading it in on a nicer one.

The reverse doesn't have the same issue.

I got a good deal on it so I'm happy regardless.

I will try the warm soapy water next, thank you
