I loaned my large cache of 1859's (maybe 700-800) to Phil310 so that he could upgrade the Haxby site information as to revised die states and new markers. I just picked up the box from Buffalo today, but haven't opened it. Regardless how much work that he put into his efforts to upgrade the site, I still won't be a die tracker, just a variety collector. He DID find a few hard-to-find '59's that were very scarce, but I always thought of them as "vanilla" coins with no variety or anomaly of note. Thanks for getting them back, so now I'll go through and see what you put on the envelops and holders.

I'll have to check th site out, I have not looked much into large cents pre 1888 with most of my knowledge post 1900.
I have more recently been researching more modern coins and post 1910 silver coinage. But my main interest from the start had always been the 1 cent coins so I should dig more into large cents.

The thought of 700-800 1859's makes me drool. I'm awaiting approximately 1100 large cents and there's a bunch in there.

Until about 2-3 years ago, I had over 1000 of the '59's, researching the varieties.

Maybe I'll send you another few. You've been very quiet on the boards the last few weeks.

Wow sounds like you doubled your research on this year in the last two years. That's some true commitment. My collection is just miss matched at the moment other then small cents

I haven't doubled my research on 1859's. If anything, it's halved or quartered from what it was. I just have the coins and not real interested in doing much more than looking at them on my work desk. I've lost the flame.

About 30 years with the Canuck coins. Maybe only 25 with Vicky varieties. There is a small cadre of folks that I've been working with or exchanging ideas that started back in the old CCRS days. And all of them are members of this board. I've handled 10's of thousands of 1859's alone.

I've had the pleasure of sitting down with Okie and his 59's more than once over the years. It, as well as his other Vicky's, are a stunning accumulation of interesting coins. I'm working my way through 700-1000 59's (not really sure of the number, I have an unattributed jar full somewhere) cataloging the die states against Haxby. My die state chart is filling out but I seem to be stalled a bit on the number of die marriages with 115 to go to get them all. I know I won't get them all but it's interesting to work the die states. Will end up with lots of traders when I finally get them all looked at!!

I would love to get some more large cents for a decent price or a good trade, mayb when you are done we can figure something out. Other then the odd double of some silver dollars and quarters I have I'm not sure what I would have worth trading. For now I will be holding off in buying any large cents on ebay as I am not knowledgeable enough to judge based on photos from ebay. I will make some more stops at my LCS to see what else they might get in. I'm sure I missed out on a great opportunity to meet okie but maybe in the future I'll have the chance to see some of his collection.

Thank you again Okiecoiner for the opportunity to study your 1859's! I still have a lot more photos to share on the thread about okiecoiner's collection, but I got busy with other things and haven't had a chance to post any lately. More to come as soon as I get some free time.

When I started seriously collecting Canadian large cents in the late 1950s, my main competitor was a dairy farmer in Ontario. His name was Jack Griffin. For many years certain dealers and others accumulated 1859s for me and sold them to me in batches 50c per coin. The condition ranged from VF to AU. Eventually the price went up to $1 and I still bought. Over the years I worked on several different methods for identifying the dies and die pairs, finally settling on the system that appears in my online catalog. Along the way Jack Griffin passed and I bought many of his 1859s. When I worked up his material only about 15 new dies showed up, something that both surprised and pleased me. The rate of the appearance of new dies and die pairs has slowed in recent years. But more will turn up and in the meantime the hunt for those known and unknown remains great fun! And, while I'm at it, many, many thanks to those who've so generously helped me over the years -- most particularly Ed, Randy and Bill (for his general encouragement and the recent loan of his hoard of 1859s to Randy).
