What was the cause of this rim damage on older cents? Is it from the minting process or is it just wear? Cheers!

I think it is both a MAD and a small Rim Fin, I have found they are usually found together.

Thanks for the information! I see the combination of MAD and Rim Fin. I see many late 30's and 1940's coins with these issues.

Why would this not be called a "collar clash" or the slang term "railroad rim" which I dislike. I see no Rim Fin.

Cheers, Bill

@hounddogbill, there is a clear difference between a collar clash and a MAD with a small Rim Fin. Most of the time a MAD will have a small fin due to the excessive pressure slamming down on the one side of the coin. A collar clash looks much different, a collar clash on a coin that has no reeded edge looks different, the only explanation of what it would look like that iv seen was on one of Coops more recent posts on the American forum. I can try and look for the link if you would like? This to me looks clear as day as a MAD coin with a little fin.

I'm still waiting for someone to post a double collar clash as I have yet to see another example of one.
