I've seen this term 'whizzed' used to describe copper (see below) and silver. Is it a distinct process for cleaning? What does it mean? How is it done? It's obviously not desirable but, specifically, why is that?

@silver, you might be interested to know that there is a CCF glossary, with definitions of a whole bunch of numismatic terms. It is accessible via a link on the left hand side of your screen.

This is intriguing. I've never heard of acid dipping being part of "whizzing." I've always understood whizzing to be an abrasive/mechanical process in contrast to non-abrasive dipping.

May I inquire as to the source of this definition? I'd like to explore it more. Thanks!

Mainly just keep away from coins that are stated as whizzed.

I agree with commems. I always thought it was a mechanical process.

I have never understood acid-dipped to mean "whizzed", either.

Right. For comparison, here is the one we have at CCF:

Quote:
whizzing
Term to describe the process of mechanically moving the metal of a lightly circulated coin to simulate luster. Usually accomplished by using a wire brush attachment on a high-speed drill.

Old timers always told me they used glass wool and a drill to whiz a coin. On my list of things to try someday.
