What you are looking at above the letters on the motto and the rim, is die wear. On the older dies when the dies would show wear, the devices moved towards the rim. So that in that VLDS die state it could have them moved into the rim:

On the new dies because of the lower profile, when they wear, the devices are not affected like the older style dies, but the fields are affected. Thus the term used for these is
DDD,
Die Deterioration Doubling.

So note directions of this. Date to the right, Liberty to the left and Motto's will be affected on the tops of the devices? Why? Because of the extreme die wear this caused by the constant movement of metal to shape the design and move the metal to fill the collar. Thus it is a common event and not a premium for the coin. The ones I find more collectable are the earlier die states, before the breakdown appears. They have a much nicer look. (And just a few strikes, and then the die wear starts to happen)
