Here are some close-ups of an 1881-O Morgan.

I have included only the PUPs and I'd like to avoid the full obv 7 rev shots since the coin is pretty worn

Is this a VAM-5?

The mint mark location is off. VAM-5 is more centered.

I know that in other denominations the mintmarks were hand stamped until the early 90s. I am unsure if that fact applies to Morgans through 1921 also.

Could it be possible that this 'O' was manually hand stamped to the working die and not the master die unlike

post 1990 for cents and post 1991 for nickels?

I just thought that this might be the reason for the 'O' not matching the VAM-5 photos...

First, thank you for the congrats.

The Morgan dollar mint marks were manually stamped in each working die throughout the series. The date digits were hubbed in 1878 and the first two digits were also hubbed from 1879 through 1883. Starting in 1884 all the date digits were hand stamped in the working dies as well creating variations in date locations.

The variation in mint mark position caused by hand stamping each working die is one reason there are so many VAMs. So if a mint mark position (or date position) doesn't match a particular VAM, it's a different VAM produced by a different die pair.
