Well this is a cast counterfeit, so not really a planchet involved. Thus it's not a cracked planchet, but it shows a very nice crack anyway. Seems kind of interesting in a useless kind of way.

I doubt that would have fooled anyone. Perhaps made more as part of an experiment.

Very neat. I've noticed contemporary counterfeit bust halves seem to frequently have cracks as well.

I buy counterfeits off some dealers who trust I'm not going to be putting them back out for sale. This was part of a lot of about 25 I bought recently.

While it wouldn't fool a collector, they probably worked well enough for commerce.

Imagine this: Back in the day, the maker gives a merchant (let's say a bar) a good deal. The bar gives them out as change. Regular folks don't study their change when they get it(especially when tipsy). They may say "Thanks" as they slip it into their pocket. If they notice it later they will just pass it along so as to not get stuck with it.
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups.
We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.
