This is a rather beautiful 1c however on close inspection it appears to have some flaws. I'm not sure whether I'm emphasizing the right things so I would be very curious to hear what people think. I'm trying go expand my knowledge in this area... it's very different from grading silver!

At one time, it looks like some pretty thick verdigris that has eaten into the metal or surface finish in some places. Since it's not going to make a whole lot of difference in the "worth" of the coin, I'd do an acetone soak to try to get most of it off. Once rid of the verdigris, I'd try some coin darkener to try to get everything back to a brown, which is what the color would have been if the surface had not been worked on. Too bad, a real nice coin, wearwise and will look much better with all the spotting blended in.

Bronze, not copper.

Really tough to evaluate mint state bronze without having the coin in hand. Carbon spotting is common, and generally impacts grade and eye appeal, but in some years, it is almost impossible to avoid. Bosox probably has the best eyes here on NFLD 1c coins, and I would take his comments seriously.

As people have said, carbon spotting and environmental damage. If this was PCGS-graded before 2010, and I think it was, I would be looking at sending it in on their guarantee, as I think it turned in the holder. Since 2010, they do not guarantee copper and bronze.

In any case, a common year and quite a few nice 1896 cents out there. Hard pass and wait for a better one.

Thanks guys - very helpful. This is PCGS graded at MS-64 Red. My take was that the detail in Vicky's hair looks excellent and the reverse is also quite strong. But the environmental damage and other defects (asymmetric toning; carbon spots etc) take it down a fairly solid notch. I put it at MS60 or 61 but never 64. And I would have thought red-brown instead of full on red.

If PGCS graded this at 64 red, then the plastic wasn't tight and oxygen got to it and it continued to spot and verdigris. It would never get a red from them now.

@okiecoiner - that's the first clear argument I've heard that favours the flips over the hard holders!

Nice coin but not petty enough for the grade unless you're getting a really great deal.

Me? I wouldn't put it anywhere near acetone. Wouldn't that take the luster off?

Flips might be plastic, but they are not impermeable to water vapour. Controlling humidity is always the challenge to preserving nice coins.
