After being intimidated by Ancients my whole life by the depth of knowledge required in this endeavor, I decided to dip my toe in the water and would like your help as I try to assemble a collection of ancients. My collecting philosophy, like that of many others, is to just collect what I like. What I like is limited by what I know, which isn't much. I just think about my history classes and lessons as I was growing up and seek out those people and places that I grew up learning about. I would appreciate any and all thoughts and advice as I assemble my collection. Started today with some popular basics.

Anonymous. Ca. 225-214/2 BC. AR didrachm or quadrigatus (22mm, 6.63 gm, 6h). NGC Choice XF 4/5 - 4/5, die shift. Uncertain mint. Laureate head of youthful Janus, two small annulets on top of head / Jupiter, hurling thunderbolt with right hand, scepter in left, in fast quadriga right driven by Winged Victory; ROMA incuse on raised tablet below. Crawford 29/3. Sydenham 64.

All 16 legs of the 4 horses are accounted for.

Fantastic acquisition
One of the best I have seen of an early Roman Quadrigatus (or didrachm).

Well photographed.

Coins are the long lived hardware survivors of ancient cultures. The knowledge gained from their research makes coins interesting historical documents in their own right. They bring ancient reality right into the era of current reality.

I also find this design to be very modern. Of course this has been co-opted by modern fashion brands like Versace. When I first saw this coin, I thought that pre-imperial Rome was stoic, conservative and understated. Then I see the huge ROMA sign under the quadriga and start thinking whether early Roman ideals were just that, ideals in a world where you had to sell your vision of grandeur to the public domestically and abroad much in the same way that we do today. That incuse sign is anything but modest.
