I was going through some old stuff last night and I opened a book that belonged to my grandfather. Inside I found a 2 and 5 Dollar bill with red serials. I'm not exactly sure what it means but I have been reading these forums most people say serial and year are important to an appraisal.

The 2 Dollar Bill is D65594695 A The year is 1928

The 5 Dollar Bill is A 50603924 A its a 1964

I also Have had a 1 Dollar bill that has no serials on it.

Im just looking for a round about worth of the 2 I posted I will try to get some pictures of today for those who want them.

Thanks for your help

Condition is the primary way of estimating the value but serial number can add too it depending on rarity.

Humans are a peculiar bunch. Why someone decided that tearing off a corner of a $2 note would ward off the bad luck is beyond my comprehension

wow so someone did it to ward off bad luck. I thought I was like wear and tear I dunno. Very odd now that you say something.

I see about 9 bux in value there.
The condition of the 28 is so bad that the 76 star
is probably worth more, and it is likely worth little
over face. I don't mean to devalue your find, if a
loved family member thought enough of it to stash it,
then it obviously would have sentimental value beyond
what someone would give you. Also, to be perfectly
honest, I myself take notes like that out of circuation
and put them away when I find them. Even though they
are worth little to nothing over face, I still enjoy
collecting them... It is also nice to know that by
saving them like this, they'll never make it to the
bank again. If they do, banks are required to send them
in for destruction. Notes like this worked too hard and
deserve a quiet retirement in a book somewhere... Not
a harsh ending in a shredder.

The bill without serial, if a government error,
is your best bet for value. Some folks go ga-ga
over coins/currency with big errors like that.

When I was a kid my grandmother would send me up the street to the "penny candy store" for Ice cream bars or popsicles and if she gave me a dollar she would always tear the corner off.
She said it was so she could prove that she paid with that bill and the corner would fit the bill in the register.
I did go to the little store many times, and never got ripped off, but that's what she said she did it for. She wouldn't have been able to fight for being shortchanged anyways.
Must have been something people did from the depression years in the coal region.
I'd get an ice cream and she would get one too. She was diabetic and not "allowed" to have ice cream so she sent us kids to do the dirty work. It was worth the hike.
