This coin is being offered by a big auction house.

I really like the color, and I wonder if it is under-graded. It does have some faint scratching, but PF60? Doesn't that seem a little anal? What am I missing?

the scratches across the bust and flatness of the reverse was probably the reason for the lower assessment. I would call it PR62

Whatever the grade, the hairlining really detracts.

The hairlines really downgraded this coin in PCGS's eyes. I don't like it, they should've put a details grade instead of the net grade.

PR-60 seems fair. There is quite a bit of chatter, in addition to the wipes. On the obverse, notice the dings behind the head, on the leaves, on the cheek, beneath the chin, and between the ear and the eye. The reverse has quite a few scratches in the star field and a ding on the eagle's right leg. There is also some doubt whether the wiping may have eliminated some evidence of light circulation on the cheek and on the eagle's head and talons. I could see PR-60 as a net compromise between PR-62 and PR-58.

with fortcollins breakdown. I find the obverse hairlines very distracting. Never crack it, I'd think you be lucky to pull MS60 again and could likely pull AU58 or a Details grade. The grade it received is more than fair IMO.

Thanks for all the insight.

I don't own it, but I might toss in a bid on it.

If the price is cheap enough grab it.

I agree with fortcollins on this one as well.

I would own it. Old proof coins are cool. It does appear to have quite a few hairlines but maybe from sliding around in a drawer .

fortcollins gave a very astute assessment on this coin, I really don't like the light staple? scratches behind liberty's head. I'm amazed this isn't in a details holder, the signs of an old cleaning or dipping is present on the reverse with discoloration. I agree never remove this as it would likely never make it into a straight grade holder again. As for me? I'd keep saving and get a nicer one if I was in the market for one.

with westcoin. even at a decent price I would pass. there is also some green coloration on the surfaces on both sides that may not fair well over time (could be lighting or photo) but just pointing it out

Sad thing about this one is that if it had been left alone, it would have been an eye appeal coin. Picture it as an untouched PR-58. It would have snagged a bean with the light cameo and sold easily.

Now? Unless the price is incredible, it's pretty heavily impaired. I think the eye would always go to the damage, and not to the better points. Maybe a buy in the $150-$200 range? That would price it about the same as a high AU business strike.

Sheesh, I have one with far less hairlining that snagged an altered surfaces...I'd walk away.
