The counterfeits are not without value, provided they are contemporary

windweaver77 You are 100% correct.

The coin is a contemporary counterfeit and therefore of some value. My comment was not meant to indicate that this particular example is so common that it is worthless - just that there are many contemporary varieties available.

The comment about a rare die variety was directed at genuine coins. This series represents the NEW English issue done with steam power and using all of the modern innovations introduced by Matthew Bolton. The number of rare varieties is low, and I would speculate that because collecting coins has been popular for much longer than US issues, that all of the die varieties are actually known. At one time, I did collect English coinage because of my ancestry, the English coins were typically made without significant varieties like US or Mexican types. I never have lost my interest in counterfeits - especially Mexican.

I own about 2 dozen George III counterfeit shillings, so I am far from being an expert on the series, however, the prices are rarely very high for examples in this grade. Unless this die pair is extremely rare, it is not a particularly valuable example and is unlikely to be worth more than $20.
