To screw up seriously at online coin auctions, follow these two important steps:

1) Believe that pictures provided by "Collectors' Universe" (which now owns PCGS, by the way), are really "TrueView Images".

2) Look for coins with obverse fields featuring space-dwelling insect-like organisms with myriad appendages, and assume the creature is actually a holy talisman of value.

So, three questions:

A) Just how different from these pictures do you think the coin can be?

B) Based on the "TrueView" images here, what would you grade the coin?

C) How much money do you think the brain-dead buyer will lose on this coin?

A) The toning may appear dark in person.

B)

C) Yes

D) Is that a hairball in the right obverse field? Or maybe a strikethrough or scratches?

Looks like a decent PR-64/PR-64+ to me. Anything in the $750-$1000 range would be a decent ballpark. I would guess that acetone would solve the dishrag remnant problem.

It sure looks more like lint than surface damage, but hard to imagine trying to sell a nice coin like that at an online auction with that thing in the photos.

Toning transfers though the mark in the fields. Looks like a struck through fibers to me.
Heavier hit to the left knee, obverse brings this one down. PR-63

To think 'outside the box' of this thread:
(My way of avoiding loosing money)

1. When it comes to auctions, I always to to the view day to examine each lot I may interested in in hand - so pictures don't apply, despite how good they may appear on line (which I also generally review). The pictures may attract me to view the lot personally.

2. I submit a written fixed price maximum bid on any coin I may be interested in, and never get involved in a bidding war on the day of the auction. That guarantees that if I am successful, I have obtained the coin at a value, that in my eyes, is reasonable. There have been occasions where I have obtained the coin at a lower price than my bid limit.

Coin looks awesome in the holder. What do you find wrong with it? To me it looks much better than in the original pictures.

Pretty surprised that pulled 64. I'm still calling struck through in the field, but the damage circled in red all pass the same direction and look to be the same hit. Sure, it's a dime and that hit is pretty small, but it's still considerable for a proof IMO.

It looks okay -- like it is worth about half what I paid for it. Those spidery marks are scratches, not mint damage as I'd gambled, and there are light grind marks too.

The color is way dark, with absolutely none of the faint rainbow luster that was promised in the pictures.

Definitely my worst purchase of the year.

I think PCGS TrueView over saturate with color and sometime lighten their pictures, hopefully not too much damage to your wallet, like coinfrog said, return if possible.

I had it at PR63 before the reveal, I wouldn't have bought it at anything over 62 price myself.
