We went to my favorite coin store yesterday, and made several purchases. My wife bought a couple silver dollars for good luck pieces. I picked up a 2006 ASE to continue that collection. And, we made a purchase for one of the grandkids. This grandson is eight, and very much like his Father. His Dad is a biology teacher, and loves animals. So does the little boy. At the coin store was a bucket filled with about 15 pounds of foreign coins. We looked through the coins in hopes of finding a few with animals on them. Boy, were we surprised. Lions, hippos, goats, birds, elephants, dogs, snakes, oxen, cats, fish, whales, dolphins. We bought 30 coins for $3, and later in the day gave them to the grandson, along with a coin book which included spaces for numerous coins, including his birth year coins, and Statehood Quarters. The grandson was delighted. Earlier today I received an e-mail from his Dad saying that the little guy spent over an hour before his bed time trying to fill the book, and looking at his animal coins. So, of our six grandkids, I know that at least one is now a coin collector. Also, I myself am fascinated with the animal theme, and think I may put together a collection of coins picturing animals. All in all, a very productive day for us with regard to coin collecting.

Collecting world coins is so much fun, and they are so cheap. What a wonderful gift you have given your grandson. (introduction to the dark side, LOL)

Have we started a Knight "apprenticeship" program yet? Would that make that young man a "Squire"? The benefits of getting a child into this hobby are very diverse. First you are teaching a kid to actually "save" money and he/she doesn't even realize it. Then comes the idea of "collecting" and a building of "worth". When they learn those terms then "value" will come into play. Starting children young can provide a lifetime of opportunity if they stick with it and I must applaud GARY for making the effort with his grandchildren. Nothing is more precious than having those "little" buddies to share your hobby with!!! And I have found the simplest of items can bring the greastest joy and the rewards may be a smile on the face, a sparkle of the eye, a glimmer of excitement and when it all ends with a great big hug well you can't ask for more than that! Take a trip around the world with your little guys and you don't even have to leave the house and, as Gary has shown, the roundtrip ticket can be obtained for less than three bucks!

Gary, that is so cool. I love it when kids get interested. I also like Terry's idea of a Knight apprenticeship. Would that make him a "Squire"?

I am greatly flattered. Isn't it a great feeling, Gary, when you can help a child towards an appreciation of coins? This morning I am to babysit my brother-in-law's three children. They will be returning to their father each with their own Morgan from my widget stash, in the hope that I can kindle something.

Sometimes the smallest of gifts can return the largest of rewards. I applaud you both for your efforts!

Since the last post, we have found two other grandkids have become excited about coin collecting. My wife and I had given them a laege coin book with spaces for all the current circulating coins, as well as Statehood Quarters. When we saw these two, a little boy and little girl, they were eager to obtain the few coins they still needed to fill some spaces. We drive about 100 miles round trip for church, and will see them tomorrow morning. We plan on taking a few coins to help them fill these empty holes, and help maintain their enthusiasm.

my 5 year old loves to sit and look at the coins I have bought for her. If I would let her she would look at them all day long everyday with the 10x loupe even though she doesn't know what she's looking at or for she loves to try to help me find stuff. When I was looking through our collection of morgans she was right there with her loupe wanting to see what I saw that was different and when I would point the differences in VAM's we had found and we started looking through the VAM book together to see if that specific variety was pictured she would get so excited to see a picture in a book of what she had just seen on a coin, she would scream at her mother (who could givea rats behind about coins) to come and look at the picture and the coin and she would try to point out the errors to her mother. I had a ball those few days and she looks forward to each shipment of new coins that comes to the house just so she can look at the new coins with her loupe

Bryan1315, what a great way to spend time with your Daughter. Neat story. Sounds like a "future collector" in the making! Mike

Sir Terry, I may be wrong but doesn't a young person have to be a 'Page' first and train up to about 7 or 8 years of age. Then if they show progress and continuing interest they are made Squire's to an individual Knight? At the rate Sir Gary is making so many 'pages' he will have a whole book before he is through. Guess the rest of us need to get busy.
