It would be raised, not level with the fields. Stains are level with the fields.

There was not a 1942 nickel with an S mintmark in that area. There was a 1942 D and you have a non-war nickel minted in Philadelphia.

In 1942 the type I was minted in Philadelphia ( no mint mark) and in Denver and they were not silver either. The War time nickels that came after had Silver content and had a much larger Mint Mark above the Dome of Monticello.
So in answer to your question, yes, it could be a type I nickel if there is no mint mark on that coin anywhere.
Can you post up a picture of the reverse? the entire reverse...

There were type 1 and 2. The type 2 was a part silver planchet with the large mintmarks. They type one is the smaller mintmarks.
Proof type 1 and 2:

Type 1 plain:
1942-Jefferson-Nickel-S-Type-1-?

Type 1 proof:
1942-Jefferson-Nickel-S-Type-1-?

No type 1 'S' mints. Just Denver type 1:
1942-Jefferson-Nickel-S-Type-1-?

Type 2 reverses:
1942-Jefferson-Nickel-S-Type-1-?
