Hi, guys! OK, so the seller says this is textile toning, and it looks like some print from the bag transferred to the obverse—and maybe there's something on the reverse as well. I'm wondering if anyone is familiar enough with this type of toning/transfer to tell me what the words would have been.

I don't think that's what he meant by textile printing .

I'm not sure what you mean, TBOP. I assume what he meant by textile toning is that it was produced by being stored in a canvas bag that was owned either by the mint or a bank, and over time it toned. The printing on the bag apparently transferred during this process onto the obverse, and maybe also the reverse, just as the weave on the bag can sometimes also imprint on the coin as it tones. Maybe I'm not putting it that well. See Number 6 on this page, about halfway down.

What am I missing?

What I'm hoping to find out is whether anyone might be able to tell from what is seen on the coin what the bag might have had printed on it.

Thanks!

Here's what I see. I think it is just coincidental toning but it kind of looks like O O or O D with several lines underneath that resembles a postage stamp cancellation.

OK, forgive my ignorance—what is coincidental toning? You're right—it does look sort of like something that might be printed on a cancelled stamp. I wonder if, rather than being toned in a bag, it might have been in an envelope.

Coincidental toning, toning that forms a specific pattern by chance. He means this may not be lettering, just another random toning pattern.

I think there are some letters there. I don't think the sulphur in the envelope will tone that brilliant color. I've seen dull colors such as pinks, greys, and blacks. Toning from a canvas bag is a good theory, but who can really tell.

I see a U and a Q on the obverse, and can't make out any more than that.

I meant and said coincidental toning in that it might be toned in a way that it might look to have some design or lettering on it.
