Find a dealer who has an XRF machine and take it there..only real way. Many dealers who handle decent amounts of bullion tend to have them.

There is little chance that it is brass, but as thedollarman said, only an XRF will tell you for sure. It has been cleaned, which gives it the lighter color.

But there is good news, because it is a scarce 1859 die pair with Haxby obverse 63 and reverse P2. It is also a late die state of the reverse with die cracks from leaf 4 to leaf 8. Nice coin to have even with the cleaning.

From the expert

Quote:
I found it. It is an obverse 63 with a very late state P2 reverse. Haxby # PC59-202. Pretty scarce coin in that die state especially

Rarity 6
Plus I am sure that it is not a brass coin

The pictures are much lighter than it is . First picture seems cleaner in some amount like a finger rubbed away tarnish but the back is quite dark and untouched . I have to learn the lingo here .

All of the 59's here in this thread are bronze and have been cleaned to within an inch of their lives, hence the color. All 3 coins show repunched letters or digits which are very common on ALL 1859's. The REAL rarity in a '59 is finding one with NO die cracks or repunched letters or digits

westy00, if you go to the link for the 1859 Haxby catalog that fourmack provided, you should be able to identify the coin from the die cracks. You will learn a lot about these fascinating coins and how to use the catalog in the effort.

Here is a link to a thread with a youtube video about how to use the Haxby site.

http://goccf.com/t/387793&SearchTerms=1859

A member of the forum did the video. There is no price guide of all of the Haxby die pairs. A few of the more popular die pairs are listed in the back of the 2011 Charlton guide.

Here is a link to the article on rarity ratings that is in the catalog.

The condition/grade of the coin suffers greatly from the harsh cleaning. Except to an avid 1859 die-tracking variety collector for a hole-filler, there's not a very large premium for that coin. There were more 1859's minted that year (10 million) than for the next 3 mintage years combined. And also more than for the next 6 years after those 3 years total mintage. A nice find and a keeper, but not a whole lot of value.
