I know the picture is not what you would like, but I think this may be good enough for what I am asking. The field seems to be like fine sandpaper. In front of Lincolns' face you can see all the microscopic marks. This is over the entire coin. If I have been reading correctly this just a very late die state coin?

I figured I could do a little better than the first time.

Could be the lighting, but the coin looks like it may have been lacquered. Some collectors, years ago, used shellac or lacquer to preserve copper coins.

@gros, I'm not 100% sure what you are describing on this coin, but wanted to note that it is often the periphery of the die that shows the damage first: think DDD, Ridge Ring, etc.

I can't see any "sand", it's probably just flow lines.

I would call this a MDS coin. You can see the devices are widening and starting to look fuzzy. IGWT is the first place to look, it seems to suffer the most from die wear. The tops of the letters get pulled toward the rim like the L in LIBERTY. In an LDS coin, they are REALLY stretched and widened. This coin is VLDS but shows well what happens as dies wear:

I agree tha tthe coin was laquered with a clear coat. This coin look way too shiny and uniform to be natural. the texture you feel may be that coating on the coin.
