Looks like a land burial coin. The corrosion over the whole surface (the uneven texture) didn't come from the mint. All large cents are incredible collector pieces. Is this your coin? Or are you looking to buy it.

That's a wonderful old coin, and barely circulated if at all. Unfortunately, you probably have to leave it as-is; anything which would remove the patina would probably also destroy the coin. The roughness of the surface indicates that it is likely, as jfransch theorizes, that the coin spent some time underground. It's been around for over 150 years; I suspect you haven't been watching it the whole time.

It has nice details...maybe even in the AU range, but it's definitely corroded which is too bad. I agree that it probably was underground for some time and found later.

Thanks guys , its a strange one , the pictures dont do it justice at all , its much smoother than it might appear , it reminds me of when we used to "blue"metal by dipping it in oil while hot.

I wouldnt want it cleaned , somehow whatever it is it makes it look and feel like id expect an old penny to be..a keeper I think.

Definitely corroded and most likely, as stated, a ground find. I'd say AU to MS details before lost in time.

Might be a candidate for a month or so long bath in virgin olive oil. However with that being said I think that your going to see a lot of damage once the corrosion is reduced.

after the month in olive oil, then maybe acetone? After that... veri-go stuff might help, but I agree that damage is going to show under all that mess.
